A silent white ghost
stands patiently among the rocks
waiting for a meal to pass by.

Several times a year
he comes this way
filling up for the long sleep.

On the west coast of Canada, nestled between high alpine reaches and the Pacific Ocean, lies a thin band of temperate rainforest. This ancient forest is home to thousands of species of plants, birds and animals. In this lush rainforest stand 1,000 year old cedar trees and 90 metre tall Sitka spruce. Rich salmon streams weave through valley bottoms that provide food for magnificent creatures such as orcas, black bears, grizzlies, eagles and the Spirit Bear.

"The Kermode bear, also known as the snow bear or Spirit Bear, is a genetically-unique subspecies of bear found in the central coast of British Columbia. Kermode bears have a recessive gene that gives a small percentage of their population white or cream-colour coats. Because of the ghost like appearance of the bears, "spirit bears" hold a prominent place in the native mythology of the area."

The greatest concentration of Spirit Bears are found on Princess Royal Island and the surrounding Central and North Coasts of British Columbia. Princess Royal Island is located in the heart of the world famous Great Bear Rainforest. The isolated inlets and islands of this mysterious and hauntingly beautiful rainforest are largely unexplored. This is a unique and magic area that must be protected at all costs. It is simply too valuable to future generations.

I've grown to love this painting. Not sure why but perhaps it's because I had so many problems with it. I painted it three times if you can believe it. But finally I got it right I think. Anyway, it's finished now...
