The Great Bear Rainforest is an area of unparalleled natural splendor and rugged, remote coastlines. It has claimed many a wayward fishing boat over the years and has become a last resting place for many, some intentional, some not.

The constant sound of crashing surf and sea gulls reminds one that this is a place apart, a place of big waves, big trees and big bears.

Those who plied its waters knew the dangers. Still do. But it's hard to give up on this way of life. When you're out here you are away from everything that intrudes and steals. Wild as it is there is no abrasiveness here because everything has its place. Even this old boat looks like it belongs here. It will soon sink back into nature as the surf reclaims it, but now it serves as a reminder of a way of life that still exists today. I salute these brave men and women who have chosen the sea as their home.
