Captain George Vancouver and HMS Discovery off the west coast of British Columbia in 1792. Refence was supplied by the Maritime Museum in Victoria and the Vancouver Central Library.
Captain George Vancouver, as captain of H.M.S. Discovery, was charged with negotiating an end to the dispute with Spain for control of the waters off the west coast of North America. To this end he was ordered, by the Admiralty, to survey the entire west coast and he performed brilliantly. A Royal Navy officer, Captain Vancouver sailed with Captain Cook for fifteen years and shared his enthusiasm for a keen sense of adventure.
Beginning in 1972, Captain Vancouver's voyage lasted over two years. He arrived on the west coast in April, 1792 and initially devoted his time to the exploration of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. After wintering in the Hawaiian Islands in 1793-94 he devoted the summer of 1794 to exploring the coast of Alaska. During 1972 and 1973, he successfully won the friendship and trust of both the Spaniards and the natives and succeeded in negotiating sovereignty over these waters. He returned to England in the fall of 1795.
