The covered wagon heading west across central America on a late, warm afternoon about 1875. Reference was supplied by the Toronto Metropolitan Central Library and the Glenbow Foundation in Calgary.

The Dominion Lands Act was formally passed on April 14, 1872. The new regulations invited homestead applications for ten dollars and a promise to live for five years on the land to qualify for title. There was no immediate rush.

The earlier settlers didn't even worry about section marks and simply "squatted" wherever they wished. The first homestead was filed in Fort Gary in 1872. These early settlers traveled across the plains by wagon and Red River Carts usually pulled by oxen.
