The stagecoach in south central British Columbia on a late evening run, about 1880. Reference was supplied by the Vancouver Central Library.

The E.J. Barnard stage line ran stage coaches from Yale and Douglas to Soda Creek. The line was organized in 1864, and by 1866 the company was in control of most of the Cariboo transportation business and operated between Victoria and Williams Creek. Frances Barnard received the contract to carry mail along the route to the Cariboo. At first he traveled by horse and, after the road was built, he created the stageline.

The construction of the Cariboo road began at Yale in 1861 and reached four hundred miles to Barkerville by 1865. Mule trains, freight wagons and stagecoaches were then able to supply central British Columbia.
