The McLaughlin Buick, Canada's first automobile, near Oshawa, Ontario, 1908. Reference was supplied by the McLaughlin Museum, Oshawa.

The McLaughlin Carriage Company of Enniskillen was well known for producing extremely well built carriages for many years. In 1876 Robert McLaughlin decided that a move to larger quarters was in order and the Company moved to Oshawa, Ontario. It was here the McLaughlin Carriage Co. was to produce the first car to be designed and built in Canada.

After signing a contract in 1907 with the Buick Motor Company providing them with a fifteen year agreement to buy Buick engines and other parts, the McLaughlin Carriage Company began building the McLaughlin Buick in 1908. There were 154 McLaughlin Buicks built that year using the Buick engine and running gear with a body designed by McLaughlin and built in Canada.

The first McLaughlin-built Chevrolet Motor Car and Chevrolet Car Company merged into General Motors of Canada Limited in 1918. The McLaughlin Buick was truly Canada's own car.
